It was in the mid 1950’s that I witnessed for the first time, the developing of a black and white print. A portrait of a youngster. Well, this fascinated me as I watched black shapes starting to form into a picture. My interest in photography started then; I was ten years old.
I’ve continued my photographic journey since then, using various format cameras and many lenses, both fixed focal lengths, and zooms. Challenging myself to capture any subject, is what keeps me motivated. Wildlife, Macro and Architectural subjects are my favourite topics.
For many years I used Agfa CT 18 colour slide film, setting myself up for wildlife photography in the many sanctuaries, wildlife parks, such as Kruger, Mabalingwe, Krugersdorp and the Lion Park north of Johannesburg. No need to visit zoos, the real thing was close at hand.
Using slide film was a challenge. 100% of my chosen image was framed in the camera’s viewfinder, what was captured was the final image. No PhotoShop, no AI, no focus stacking, no stitching, no extra sharping, no contrast and no exposure change. The need for such accuracy has formed the style of my photography, thus I produce bold, full framed images that now, using digital equipment, are 95% created “in camera”. My competition entries too, are “in camera” created images.
